… launches online self-service
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a two-week extension of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, giving eligible Nigerians additional time to register ahead of future elections.
The registration exercise, which started on August 18, 2025, was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026. However, the electoral body said the deadline has now been moved to July 24, 2026.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna.
According to the Commission, the extension followed consultations and feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
INEC also announced the introduction of an online self-service voter registration option for first-time registrants.
The new platform is designed to allow eligible Nigerians to begin and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.
The Commission explained that the digital platform is equipped with identity verification measures, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
“In order to provide additional opportunity for eligible citizens who are yet to register, the Commission has extended the exercise to Friday, 24th July 2026.
“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters ahead of future electoral activities.
“In furtherance of its commitment to innovation, accessibility, and improved service delivery, the Commission is pleased to announce the introduction of a self-service registration option (online) for eligible first-time voters.
“The new service will become available from Wednesday, 8th July, 2026, through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal – cvr.inecnigeria.org, where the step-by-step guide is also provided.”
INEC reiterated its commitment to maintaining a voter registration process that is credible, inclusive and accessible, while leveraging technology to improve public participation in the electoral process.
The Commission also encouraged all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered as voters to make use of the extended registration period and the newly introduced online registration option.
