The Oba Ewuare II has called an emergency meeting of native doctors, traditional priests and priestesses as concerns grow over worsening insecurity in Edo State and across Nigeria.
The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City, is expected to bring together traditional spiritual leaders to discuss ways of supporting efforts to tackle the security challenges facing the country.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued on Friday by Chief Victor Nosakhare on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor.
According to the palace, the gathering was convened on the instruction of the monarch and should be treated as a matter of urgency.
The statement said the meeting would focus on exploring traditional approaches that could complement the work of security agencies and government authorities in addressing rising cases of kidnapping, cult-related violence and other criminal activities.
In a related move, the Benin Traditional Council has also invited youth leaders, popularly known as Okaighele, to a separate meeting at the Oba’s Palace on Wednesday, June 24.
The palace’s intervention highlights growing efforts by traditional institutions to support ongoing security measures as concerns mount over the security situation in Edo State.
