Interpol praises EFCC for strengthening global fight against financial crimes

Abuja, Nigeria – April 11, 2025 – The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has publicly praised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Consequently, they recognize EFCC’s outstanding efforts in combating financial crimes effectively.

On April 9, 2025, INTERPOL officials praised the EFCC’s operational efficiency and commitment to global collaboration during a meeting in Abuja.

Cyril Gout, INTERPOL’s Executive Director of Police Services, led the delegation and engaged with EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede about joint initiatives.

This visit emphasized the urgent need for global cooperation in tackling financial crimes, with the EFCC as a key player.

Additionally, Olaolu Adegbite, Assistant Inspector General of Police, commended the strong partnership between the EFCC and Nigerian law enforcement agencies.

“We work closely with the EFCC, ensuring seamless coordination in all operations,” Adegbite stated.

He emphasized the agency’s global reputation, noting that the EFCC has become a symbol of Nigeria’s commitment to justice.

Additionally, he highlighted the EFCC’s involvement in key INTERPOL projects, including efforts to combat money laundering through the newly introduced Silver Notice.

The meeting coincided with the official handover of the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) to regional authorities.

Designed to enhance cross-border crime-fighting, WAPIS enables real-time data sharing among ECOWAS nations.

Adegbite explained that the system helps track criminals who exploit regional borders, with the EFCC leading its implementation since 2019.

Gout stressed the importance of WAPIS in strengthening Nigeria’s security framework. “A unified information system is essential for effective law enforcement,” he said.

This recognition from INTERPOL underscores the EFCC’s growing influence in global anti-crime efforts.
