Iran has warned Ukraine of serious consequences following an attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, describing the strike as illegal and a violation of international law.
The warning came after Tehran said one sailor was killed and several others injured when an Iranian ship was hit during the weekend attack.
Speaking at a weekly press briefing on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei condemned the incident, saying the strike violated the United Nations Charter and amounted to a dangerous act of aggression.
“The attack was absolutely illegal and unjustified,” Baqaei said, adding that Ukraine’s actions “will certainly not go unanswered” and that the consequences would be “unforeseen.”
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea on Saturday, targeting vessels believed to be transporting military cargo linked to Iran.
While Ukraine described the operation as a legitimate military action, Iran insisted it breached international law and said those responsible must be held accountable.
The incident has further heightened tensions between the two countries and raised concerns over security in the Caspian Sea, where military activity and shipping operations have become increasingly sensitive amid wider geopolitical rivalries.
Analysts say Tehran’s strong response suggests the possibility of retaliatory measures, fuelling fears of further escalation in the region and increased risks to commercial and military vessels operating in the strategic waterway.
