Three United Nations peacekeepers have been killed in southern Lebanon following Israeli strikes, with others seriously injured, according to UN officials.
A UN source said an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed over the weekend after a projectile hit a UN position near Adchit al-Qusayr. Early findings suggest the shell may have been fired from an Israeli tank.
The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon later confirmed that two more Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in a separate incident on Monday.
Reacting to the killings, UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as a serious violation of international law. He expressed condolences to the victims’ families and wished a quick recovery to those injured.
He also stressed that peacekeepers should never be targeted, noting that they are serving to maintain peace and stability.
Several European countries, along with the European Union, have called on all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of UN personnel and respect international law.
The incidents have raised fresh concerns about the growing risks faced by peacekeepers in the region
