Suspected ISWAP insurgents have killed at least 20 Nigerian soldiers, including a commanding officer, during an attack on the army’s 149 Battalion in Malam-Fatori, Borno State.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the assault, which took place on Friday, January 24, involved heavily armed ISWAP fighters arriving in gun trucks and launching a surprise attack on the military base.

A surviving soldier revealed that ISWAP militants “rained bullets everywhere,” catching the troops off guard.

Despite their efforts to fend off the attackers during a three-hour gun battle, the soldiers were overpowered, resulting in the death of the commanding officer, a lieutenant colonel.

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) emerged in 2016 after a factional split from Boko Haram.

This split occurred when ISWAP’s leaders accused Boko Haram’s then-leader, Abubakar Shekau, of killing fellow Muslims and deviating from the core principles of jihad.

Since its inception, ISWAP has grown to become one of the most organized and dangerous terror groups in West Africa.

The group has primarily operated in Nigeria’s northeastern region, including Borno State, where it targets military bases, security forces, and civilians.

Unlike Boko Haram, ISWAP often portrays itself as a protector of civilians, providing limited services such as food and security in areas under its control.

However, the group’s operations, such as this recent attack, have caused widespread destruction, leaving thousands of people dead and displacing millions.

ISWAP’s rise in power has been fueled by its ties to the Islamic State, from which it receives funding, training, and weapons.

The group’s strategic approach to warfare, focusing on military targets, has made it a formidable opponent for Nigerian security forces.

Security sources confirmed that ISWAP’s activities in northeastern Nigeria continue to undermine stability, escalating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

This latest ISWAP assault highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian forces in combating insurgency and restoring peace in the region.

With ISWAP’s increasing influence and continued attacks, the Nigerian military remains under significant pressure to address the growing threat and protect vulnerable communities.
