Journalists in Akwa Ibom to hold media stakeholders summit

The first-ever Media Stakeholders Summit in Akwa Ibom State is set to take place on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Uyo.

According to a statement issued by the Secretary of the event planning committee, Mr Kufre Etuk, who is the Editor-in-Chief of The Crest Newspaper, the one-day event has “The State of the Media in Akwa Ibom State: The Way Forward,” as its theme.

The statement explained that the event aims to bring together reporters, editors, and publishers for a comprehensive assessment of the media landscape in the state.

Co-chaired by Comrade Israel Umoh, former Chairman of the NUJ and Publisher of Straightnews newspaper, and Mr. Cletus Ukpong, Regional Editor of South-South/South-East Premium Times, the summit promises to be a watershed moment for the media community.

The event will feature goodwill messages from Comrade Amos Etuk, Chairman of NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, and Comrade Utitofon Morgan Ukpong, Chancellor of Conference of Online Publishers, (COOPA). Dr. (Mrs.) Idongesit Ashameri, former Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ, Akwa Ibom State, will deliver a keynote address on “Media Practice in Akwa Ibom: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.”

Other distinguished speakers include Mr. Idorenyin Aquaisua, Publisher of Media Post International, who will discuss “The Challenges of Media Industry in Akwa Ibom State”; Mr. Ekemini Simon, award-winning journalist with The Mail newspaper, Uyo, who will speak on “Opportunities for Media Sustainability in Akwa Ibom State”; Otuekong Franklyn Isong, Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN), who will examine press freedom in Akwa Ibom; and Mr. Ukpong, who will address “Ethical and Responsible Journalism” in the state.

The summit will comprise two sessions: a Pre-Summit session with media relations managers and a Stakeholders’ Business session.

Attendance is strictly by invitation.
