Canada has announced fresh retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 American-made products worth about $20 billion, escalating the trade dispute between the two countries.
The new measures, which take effect on September 8, will affect a wide range of US products, including steel, aluminium, dairy products, appliances, farm equipment, electronics, seafood, clothing, cosmetics and toilet paper.
The tariffs will range from 15% to 50%, with Canada matching the corresponding tariff rates imposed by the United States on the affected products.
Canadian officials said the measures are intended to protect Canadian businesses and reduce reliance on American imports rather than generate additional government revenue.
Some aluminium products, furniture, clothing and apparel will attract tariffs of up to 50%.
Appliances, dairy products including cheese, fish and seafood, as well as certain steel and aluminium derivatives, will face tariffs of 25%.
Canada will also maintain its existing countertariffs on US automobiles.
The latest measures come as tensions over trade between Canada and the United States continue to worsen, with both countries imposing tariffs on each other’s goods.
The broad scope of Canada’s latest action means the impact could extend beyond major industries to everyday consumer products sold across the country.
