JUST IN: Gunmen ambush Imo lawmaker’s convoy, kill two police aides
DDM News

(DDM) – Two police officers attached to an unnamed member of the Imo State House of Assembly were killed in a deadly ambush on Sunday evening near Okigwe Roundabout.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the attack occurred at about 5:35 pm when the lawmaker’s convoy experienced a mechanical breakdown.
While the officers were attempting to seek help, armed assailants launched a surprise assault, killing both policemen on the spot.
The attackers reportedly made away with the officers’ rifles, intensifying fears about the spread of illegal weapons across the South-East.
The whereabouts of the lawmaker remain unknown at the time of this report, raising suspicions of a possible kidnapping.
Security sources confirmed the incident via a police wireless message, noting that further updates would follow pending investigations.
The ambush marks another chilling episode in a series of targeted attacks on public officials and security personnel in Imo State.
Over the past year, the region has seen a sharp rise in violent incidents, many of which remain unresolved due to limited operational capacity of security agencies.
According to a recent Intersociety report, no fewer than 240 persons were killed and at least 270 others abducted in the South-East between December 2024 and January 2025.
Public confidence in government protection continues to decline as gunmen operate with increasing boldness in broad daylight.
This attack, near a major roundabout, highlights the deteriorating security situation even on highways considered vital to state transportation and governance.
The Nigerian Police Force has yet to issue an official statement naming the lawmaker or confirming whether he has been rescued.
Meanwhile, calls for improved intelligence, stronger community policing, and investment in road safety infrastructure have intensified.
Civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and advocacy groups are urging urgent intervention from both state and federal authorities to prevent further bloodshed.
As the search for the missing official continues, many in Imo State remain gripped by fear, worried that the violence could escalate if immediate action is not taken.
