“I Was Raped During a Robbery, Police Did Nothing”
DDM News

Growing insecurity in and around the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has triggered widespread alarm among students and concerned stakeholders.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that students of the institution are living in fear due to escalating reports of rape, robbery, theft, and hostel invasions that appear to be occurring unchecked.
Multiple reports indicate that these incidents are not isolated but have become frequent, leaving students traumatised and uncertain about their safety on and off campus.
In recent weeks, several students have taken to social media and private conversations to recount chilling encounters with suspected criminals, including robbers, rapists, and cultists operating in Malete, the university’s host community.
One of the most disturbing accounts came from a female student who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of her experience.
According to her, a thief broke into her hostel, stole her phone and ATM card, and then raped her before fleeing the scene.
She reported the incident to the police in Malete, only to receive what she described as a dismissive and insensitive response.
“The police told me to just go and treat myself,” she said. “They didn’t do anything. I was raped by a thief who entered my hostel. Since then, I’ve been mentally disturbed. Each time I hear a knock on my door, I freeze. I don’t feel safe anymore.”
Her ordeal has amplified calls for urgent intervention from the university management, the local police, and the Kwara State Government.
Many students say the university’s security system is weak, especially for those living off-campus in private hostels scattered across Malete town.
There is also rising frustration over the perceived inaction of the Students’ Union, which students accuse of staying silent despite mounting threats to their safety.
Kwara State University, established in 2009, was envisioned as a centre of excellence.
However, students and parents now worry that the institution is gradually becoming unsafe due to poor security infrastructure and weak community policing.
Students are calling for a range of measures, including increased security patrols, better lighting in and around hostels, verified hostel registries, collaboration with vigilante groups, and serious attention from the police.
Without swift intervention, they warn, the current climate of fear and trauma could worsen, putting the mental and physical well-being of many more students at risk.
