The Police Service Commission (PSC) in Nigeria has announced the appointment of two seasoned officers, AIG Suleiman Amuda Yusuf and AIG Rhoda Adetutu Olofu, as Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs).

According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Media and Publicity of the PSC, the appointments were made to fill vacancies created by the retirement of DIGs previously in charge of Operations and Information and Communication Technology.

AIG Suleiman Amuda Yusuf, who was previously the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of Zone 9 Umuahia, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

His career includes serving as AIG Federal Operations at the Force Headquarters, Commissioner of Police in Taraba State, and CP of the Police Mobile Force.

He has also held key positions such as Deputy Commandant at the Police College in Kaduna and Oji River, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Jigawa State, and Assistant Commissioner in the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID) in Bauchi State.

AIG Rhoda Adetutu Olofu, who was the Force Secretary prior to her new appointment, has an equally impressive track record.

She previously served as AIG of the Maritime Police Command in Lagos, Commissioner of Police for the Ports Authority Police Western Ports Command, and CP of the X-Squad at the Force CID.

She has also held roles such as CP Servicom in the Department of Research and Planning, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Research and Planning), and DCP in the Departments of Training, Development, Logistics, and Supply.

AIG Olofu began her career as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent on March 3, 1990, and was trained at the Police Academy, where AIG Yusuf also received his training.

The PSC highlighted that both officers have maintained clean service records and represent the North Central Geo-political zone, making them the most senior officers eligible for the positions.

Their promotions are expected to serve as a motivating factor for improved performance within the Force.

DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), Chairman of the Police Service Commission, congratulated the newly appointed DIGs on their achievements.

He emphasized the importance of their continued contribution to the Nigeria Police Force, both in service and after retirement, noting that their experience would remain invaluable to the Force’s growth.

He also reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring timely and merit-based promotions for police officers.

The DIG rank

The rank of Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) is the second-highest rank in the Nigeria Police Force, ranking below only the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The DIG is a senior officer who assists the IGP in the administration of the police force.

They are responsible for overseeing specific departments or directorates within the force.

DIGs are typically experienced and highly decorated officers who have served in various capacities within the police force.

They have undergone rigorous training and have demonstrated exceptional leadership and management skills.

As DIGs, they are members of the Police Management Team and play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of the force.

In terms of protocol, DIGs are highly respected and accorded specific privileges and benefits.

They are entitled to certain ceremonial honors and are often called upon to represent the IGP at official events.

The rank of DIG is a prestigious one, and officers who attain this rank are considered to be among the most accomplished and dedicated in the Nigeria Police Force.
