Real Madrid coach José Mourinho has praised Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal as a “very good player” but has firmly ruled out any possibility of bringing the highly rated youngster to the Spanish capital.
Mourinho was asked about Yamal amid the growing attention surrounding the Barcelona star and whether Real Madrid could consider making a move for the Spain international. The Portuguese coach responded emphatically, making it clear that he has no interest in disrupting his current squad to accommodate the teenage sensation.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Mourinho said: “I won’t sign him. We already have the best players.”
The response immediately attracted attention because of the long standing rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona. A player moving directly between the two Spanish giants would represent one of the most dramatic transfers in modern La Liga history, particularly when the player involved is regarded as one of the brightest talents in world football.
Yamal has rapidly developed into one of Barcelona’s most influential attacking players despite his young age. His ability to beat defenders, create chances and influence games from the wing has made him one of the most closely watched players in European football.
His technical quality has also earned widespread praise from managers, former players and supporters across the football world.
For Mourinho, however, admiration for Yamal does not mean that the player is required at Real Madrid.
The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester United boss made it clear that he is satisfied with the quality available to him and believes his current squad already contains enough talent to compete for major honours.
That confidence is particularly significant as Real Madrid prepare for the start of their La Liga campaign.
Mourinho’s side are scheduled to begin their league campaign away against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday, August 22.
The Portuguese manager is therefore entering the new campaign with his attention firmly focused on preparing his existing squad rather than chasing Barcelona’s prized winger.
Yamal’s continued rise has nevertheless ensured that his name remains at the centre of conversations involving Europe’s biggest clubs.
The Barcelona forward has already established himself as a player capable of performing under enormous pressure. His confidence on the ball, creativity in the final third and ability to produce decisive moments have helped him become a key part of Barcelona’s attacking plans.
The youngster’s development has also strengthened Barcelona’s position in the long term.
For Real Madrid, attempting to sign Yamal would not only be extremely complicated from a sporting perspective but would also carry enormous political and emotional significance because of the rivalry between the clubs.
Mourinho’s comments effectively remove that possibility from his immediate plans.
Instead, the Real Madrid coach appears determined to work with the players already under his management.
He also spoke positively about another young attacking player, Yan Diomande, whose versatility attracted Mourinho’s attention.
Mourinho explained that although he did not specifically request Diomande’s signing, he wanted the player at the club because of his ability to operate on either side of the attack.
“No, I did not ask, but I wanted him. He’s a great player who can play on both sides,” Mourinho said.
The comments provide an insight into the type of attacking options Mourinho wants available to him.
Rather than focusing on one superstar name, the Portuguese coach appears interested in building a balanced squad containing players capable of performing different roles.
That approach could prove important during a long season in which Real Madrid will compete across several competitions.
For Yamal, meanwhile, the latest comments are unlikely to affect his immediate situation at Barcelona.
The winger remains an important part of the Catalan club’s plans and continues to be viewed as one of its most valuable young assets.
His performances have already made him a major figure in the club’s present and future, and Barcelona will be hoping that he can continue developing while helping the team challenge for domestic and European honours.
Mourinho’s statement also reflects the competitive nature of elite football.
Even when a manager recognises the extraordinary ability of another player, there is no guarantee that he will want to sign him.
Tactical requirements, squad balance and confidence in existing players can all influence recruitment decisions.
In Yamal’s case, Mourinho believes Real Madrid already have the quality they need.
That message could also be interpreted as a show of confidence in the players who will carry the responsibility of leading Madrid through the new season.
The Spanish giants will face significant expectations once the campaign begins, with supporters demanding success in La Liga and on the European stage.
Mourinho will therefore be judged primarily on what he achieves with the squad currently available to him.
Yamal, on the other hand, will continue his own journey at Barcelona, where expectations are equally high.
The young winger has already shown that he can handle pressure, but the coming seasons will bring even greater demands as opponents adapt to his style and Barcelona rely increasingly on his creativity.
For now, however, there is no sign of a sensational switch across the Clasico divide.
Mourinho has delivered a clear message: Yamal may be an exceptional footballer, but Real Madrid are not looking to sign him.
With the new La Liga season about to begin, the attention will now turn from transfer speculation to the pitch, where Mourinho’s Real Madrid and Yamal’s Barcelona will pursue their respective ambitions.
