Community Shield: Maresca Explains Why Man City Lost 3-0 to Arsenal

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has attributed his side’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the 2026 Community Shield to a significant difference in pre-season preparation and match fitness between the two teams.

City entered the season-opening contest at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium with several players lacking competitive minutes, while Arsenal arrived having given all 11 starters some pre-season playing time. Maresca believes that difference was decisive as Arsenal quickly established control of the match.

The defeat marked a difficult competitive debut for Maresca as Manchester City manager following the departure of Pep Guardiola. Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, produced a confident performance and secured the Community Shield with goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard.

Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League, Maresca pointed directly to his team’s limited preparation.

The Italian coach noted that four players in City’s starting XI had not played a single minute during the club’s pre-season campaign. Arsenal, by contrast, had given every one of their starting players valuable minutes before the competitive fixture.

Maresca said the physical condition of the two teams was therefore significantly different, making it difficult for City to match Arsenal’s intensity and rhythm during the contest.

That difference was visible almost immediately.

Arsenal took the lead just 23 seconds after kick-off when Calafiori reacted quickest to put the ball beyond the City goalkeeper. The goal was the fastest scored in the Community Shield for 58 years and immediately placed Maresca’s side under pressure.

City attempted to respond, but Arsenal remained organised and dangerous in possession.

The London club continued to exploit spaces and create opportunities, while City struggled to establish the fluid attacking football normally associated with the team.

Arsenal eventually doubled their advantage in the 28th minute.

Kai Havertz rose to meet a cross and directed a header into the net, giving Arsenal a 2-0 advantage before half-time. The goal further exposed City’s defensive problems and left Maresca facing a difficult task during his first competitive match in charge.

The second half began in similar fashion.

Arsenal needed only three minutes after the restart to add a third goal, with captain Martin Ødegaard finishing a move involving Christos Tzolis. The Norwegian’s strike effectively ended City’s hopes of recovering from the two-goal deficit.

Maresca was particularly unhappy with the way his side conceded early goals.

Although the manager acknowledged the importance of pre-season fitness, the defeat also exposed the difficulties involved in preparing a team during a period of transition.

Maresca is attempting to establish his own ideas after taking over from Guardiola, whose reign brought Manchester City unprecedented domestic and European success.

The new manager must therefore balance tactical changes with the need to ensure that his players are physically prepared for a demanding campaign.

The Community Shield offered Maresca an early indication of the work still required.

Arsenal looked more cohesive and sharper, while City’s lack of minutes for several starters appeared to affect their ability to maintain intensity.

The contrast was especially noticeable during the opening stages, when Arsenal immediately played with confidence and City were forced to defend under pressure.

However, the result does not necessarily define City’s season.

The Community Shield is traditionally viewed as an important curtain raiser rather than a definitive indication of how the Premier League campaign will unfold. Maresca will have an opportunity to correct the weaknesses exposed in Cardiff when the league season begins.

Manchester City also have significant quality within their squad, meaning the new manager has plenty of resources with which to work.

The challenge will be turning that individual quality into a cohesive team capable of competing with Arsenal and other Premier League title contenders.

For Arsenal, the victory provided an early boost ahead of their title defence.

Mikel Arteta’s team showed greater sharpness, composure and attacking efficiency, while their ability to punish City’s mistakes demonstrated why they are expected to be among the leading contenders for another Premier League title.

The Community Shield success also continued Arsenal’s impressive record in this fixture against Manchester City. The Gunners have now beaten City in all four of their Community Shield meetings.

For Maresca, however, the priority is moving forward rather than dwelling on the result.

The former Chelsea manager has inherited a team undergoing an important transition, and the defeat provides useful information about where improvements are required.

Match fitness will naturally increase as the season progresses, while players who missed pre-season will have more opportunities to regain their rhythm.

Maresca will also have to ensure that his tactical approach is properly understood by the squad.

The Community Shield was his first competitive match at the helm, and a difficult opening result will inevitably bring scrutiny. Nevertheless, the manager has stressed the importance of looking beyond the scoreline and addressing the underlying issues.

City’s next performances will provide a clearer indication of whether the Community Shield defeat was simply a consequence of limited preparation or evidence of deeper problems.

For Arsenal, the 3-0 victory could provide valuable momentum as they begin their defence of the Premier League title.

For Manchester City, it serves as an early warning.

Maresca knows his team must become sharper, fitter and more cohesive, and he will now have the opportunity to work on those areas before the pressure of a full competitive season intensifies.

The Community Shield may have ended with Arsenal celebrating, but the real test for both teams begins with the Premier League campaign.
