Some parts of Kano State are reportedly burning amidst the curfew imposed by the state government after the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the governor of Kano State and declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the March 18 election.
Yusuf, who contested on the platform of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) was declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Tribunal, however, upturned INEC’s decision and declared the APC candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, winner of the election, resulting in reports of violent riots across the ancient city.
A source, in a brief message via WhatsApp told News Band:
“Kano is burning. Destruction everywhere. Tension is very high. Pandemonium. Shootings and burning. Murtala Mohammed way down to the High Court. Policemen are shooting. Sky is full of smoke.”
It could be recalled that News Band reported that because of fear of the unknown, the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal had announced that the judgement will be transmitted virtually via Zoom.
The Tribunal, in keeping to the announcement, sat and read out the judgement at the Miller Road, Kano High Court complex via Zoom as the three-member panel of judges are not physically present in the courtroom.
Meanwhile, following the controversial tribunal judgement and the attendant riots in parts of the city, a 24-hour curfew has been declared in the state as part of measures to forestall further breakdown of law and order by irate party supporters.
There is jubilation, however, in some parts of the city by supporters of Gawuna following the court victory on Wednesday.
