Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to remain focused on governance despite criticisms, noting that true leadership often attracts both opposition and eventual praise.
Obasanjo made the statement on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Oyo State Government House in Ibadan, where he met with Governor Makinde and members of the state executive council.
The former president encouraged Makinde to ignore political distractions and concentrate on delivering meaningful development to the people.
According to Obasanjo, leaders who are determined to bring change are usually misunderstood at first, but their results eventually earn them admiration, even from their harshest critics.
“Don’t be discouraged by what people say,” Obasanjo told Makinde.
“When I was in office, I was insulted every day. But today, those same people now praise me because they’ve seen the results of what we did.”
He explained that leadership demands patience, courage, and long-term vision, adding that no great achievement comes without resistance or controversy.
The former president urged the governor to continue prioritizing projects that directly impact citizens’ welfare, especially in infrastructure, education, and agriculture.
Obasanjo praised Makinde’s efforts in maintaining peace and stability in Oyo State, describing his leadership as “a blend of wisdom and youthful energy.”
He also reminded political leaders across Nigeria to focus on policies that would unite citizens and build a foundation for future generations.
Responding, Governor Seyi Makinde expressed appreciation for Obasanjo’s visit and mentorship, noting that the former president remains a model of resilience and statesmanship in Nigerian politics.
Makinde assured that his administration remains committed to transparency, accountability, and service delivery, emphasizing that criticism, when constructive, serves as a guide for improvement.
He described Obasanjo as a father figure whose words continue to inspire younger leaders in public service.
