JUST IN: Obidient Mov’t Responds to Gov Okpebholo’s Threat Against Peter Obi

The Obidient Movement has strongly condemned Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over a viral video in which he allegedly warned Labour Party leader Peter Obi never to set foot in the state without first notifying him.

In a statement released on Friday, July 18, 2025, the group described the governor’s comment as not only dangerous but also unconstitutional.

They stressed that such utterances pose a serious threat to national unity and must not be ignored.

According to Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communications for the Obidient Movement, Governor Okpebholo’s alleged threat violates Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees every Nigerian the right to move freely and reside anywhere within the country.

“It is disturbing and constitutionally indefensible for Governor Okpebholo to threaten or seek to restrict this fundamental right,” the statement said.

The group pointed out that this was not the first time such threats had been directed at Peter Obi.

They recalled a similar incident involving the Governor of Benue State, who previously made hostile remarks during Obi’s humanitarian outreach in the region.

“In both instances, Mr. Obi was on a mission of goodwill offering humanitarian support to citizens neglected by the very governments now threatening him,” the group added.

The Movement warned that statements from serving governors, who are the chief security officers of their states, carry serious implications and cannot be taken lightly.

They also raised concerns about the potential consequences if anything were to happen to Mr. Obi.

“These threats should not be dismissed. If anything happens to Peter Obi, Nigerians will know where to look,” Kazaure warned.

Calling for urgent national attention, the Obidient Movement urged Nigerians, civil society organizations, and the international community to speak out against the rise of political intolerance and divisive rhetoric.

“Every Nigerian has a right to move freely in any part of this country. Nigeria belongs to all of us. No individual, regardless of position, should incite division or attempt to silence opposing voices,” the statement concluded.

Peter Obi, a leading opposition figure since the 2023 general election, continues to draw massive support across the country, especially from Nigeria’s youth.

The Obidient Movement, which backs his political ideology, has remained vocal in challenging perceived threats against him.

As of the time of filing this report, Governor Okpebholo has not responded publicly to the allegations or the video circulating online.
