The Nigeria Police Force sealed off the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Wednesday following a violent clash between two rival factions of the party.
The confrontation, which unfolded less than 24 hours earlier, involved the Saminu Turaki-led faction and members loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Eyewitnesses reported that the situation quickly spiraled out of control, prompting security operatives to step in.
During the chaos, Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State were reportedly teargassed as they tried to gain entry to the premises.
The incident has further amplified concerns about the escalating leadership crisis within the PDP, with party officials cautioning that the unrest could jeopardize the party’s national unity if left unresolved.
As of Wednesday afternoon, heavily armed police officers had secured the secretariat, barring staff and supporters from accessing the building.
While the police have not yet issued an official statement detailing their actions, both factions continue to hurl accusations at one another over the root causes of the confrontation.
