9 Rescued, 1 Child Missing As Floodwaters Trap School Bus In Anambra A school journey turned into a frightening rescue operation in Anambra State after floodwaters trapped a school bus along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The bus was carrying schoolchildren and adults when heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to rapidly rise and overwhelm the road. The vehicle became stranded in deep water, leaving those inside in a dangerous situation. Police operatives and members of the local community responded to the emergency and succeeded in rescuing nine people — seven schoolchildren and two adults. However, one schoolchild remains missing, with search-and-rescue efforts continuing to locate the child. Eyewitness footage circulating online showed the school bus surrounded by floodwater, while a truck driver reportedly attempted to reach the stranded children but was unable to get close because of the depth and force of the water. Following the distress call, the Anambra State Police Command mobilised its Safe School Operatives to assist with the rescue. The Commissioner of Police directed that the search operation should continue and be expanded until the missing child is found. Some reports also indicated that the rescued children were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, for medical assessment. The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has disclosed that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have been given the authority to nominate key officials of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a new statement, the NDC said Obi and Kwankwaso will nominate the Director-General of the campaign, Deputy Director-General for the North, campaign spokesman, deputy spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and other key officials. The party said the decision is part of efforts to build an inclusive and coordinated campaign structure as the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket prepares for the 2027 presidential contest. According to the NDC, a complete organogram of the proposed campaign structure was prepared in August and made available to Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso for their input. The party said it has also developed a campaign timetable and is waiting for arrangements on campaign funding and fundraising to be concluded. The NDC further stated that campaign funds will be paid into the presidential campaign account and managed by officials nominated by the presidential candidate and his running mate, alongside the party’s National Treasurer. The party said this arrangement is intended to promote transparency and accountability and ensure compliance with its reporting obligations under Nigeria’s electoral laws. The announcement comes amid recent controversy surrounding a separate 59-member campaign council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement. The NDC had distanced itself from that structure, while the movement maintained that it is an independent organisation. The latest statement from the NDC therefore provides further clarification on how the party intends to constitute its official presidential campaign machinery. The party has also appealed to its candidates and supporters at all levels to avoid internal disagreements and concentrate on the 2027 elections. The NDC said there are no battles to fight within the party and identified the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as its common political opponent.
