Justice for cows: Plateau Govt orders probe into mysterious cow poisoning in Bassa

The Plateau State Government has launched an investigation into the alleged poisoning of 36 cows in Bassa Local Government Area.
According to reports, the incident occurred in Zanwar community on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, while the cattle were grazing around Tafi Gana junction.
Chairman of Miyetti Allah in Bassa, Ya’u Idris, confirmed the alleged poisoning to journalists on Thursday, April 17.
Idris said the cows ingested suspected poisonous garden eggs scattered across the grazing fields.
He called on Fulani residents in the area to remain calm and avoid any acts of retaliation.
He also assured that security agencies had begun investigating the incident.
The poisoning happened a day after Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited Miango and apologised to victims of recent attacks.
Over 50 people were killed earlier this week by armed bandits in several communities in Miango district, Bassa LGA.
Observers believe the cow poisoning may be part of ongoing farmer-herder reprisals in the region.
Police confirmed that 33 cows died from the alleged poisoning, not 36 as earlier reported.
Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo said senior officers had visited the community to assess the situation.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Bzigu Kwazhi, led the team alongside Plateau Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina.
They commiserated with the affected cattle owner, Sama’ila Nuhu, and urged residents to avoid self-help.
Alabo said the police will arrest and prosecute those behind the poisoning.
Plateau Government spokesperson, Joyce Ramnap, also confirmed the state’s involvement in the investigation.
She said Governor Mutfwang directed immediate action from the Ministry of Livestock Development and Veterinary Services.
A team of veterinary and environmental officers has been deployed to examine the scene and collect samples.
Ramnap urged residents to remain calm and avoid circulating false information on social media.
She warned that unverified claims could escalate existing tensions between communities in the area.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence and justice for all citizens.
Officials also promised transparency in the investigation and encouraged cooperation from all parties.
She called for inclusive dialogue and long-term solutions to grazing and land use disputes.
The state government continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as facts emerge.
Authorities have urged restraint and stressed that violence will only deepen the region’s crisis.
Peace advocates in Plateau have applauded the swift response and urged trust in the process.
