Rwanda is preparing for its presidential election on Monday, July 15, 2024, and incumbent President Paul Kagame is widely expected to win a landslide victory, extending his rule by five years.

Kagame, who has been in power for three decades, addressed thousands of supporters at a rally in Kigali on Saturday, the final day of campaigning.

The election is seen as a formality, with Kagame running virtually unopposed. His main challengers, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana, have struggled to attract crowds to their rallies. Criticism of Kagame is severely punished in Rwanda, and political dissent is rare.

Kagame’s Rwanda Patriotic Front has been in power since 1994, and the party’s dominance is expected to continue. The election is being closely watched by the international community, with some expressing concerns over the lack of political freedom in Rwanda.

As the country prepares for the election, tensions with neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo remain high.

Rwanda has been accused of supporting rebel groups in the region, which has led to tensions between the two nations.
