The Kano State Government on Thursday, directed all private and voluntary schools in the state to strictly adhere to the 2024/25 school calendar issued by the Ministry of Education.

PUNCH Online reports that the Director of Special Duties, Ministry of Education, Mustapha Yahya, made this known in a statement.

The statement directed that all primary and post-primary schools in Kano state close on Friday, February 28, 2025, and reopen on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

The statement further warned that any school that fails to comply will face appropriate penalties.

He said the directive was in line with the state government’s policy under Governor Abba Yusuf to enhance teaching and learning while ensuring balanced and sustainable school growth in schools across the state.

The Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to providing high-quality education and enforcing adherence to the approved calendar.

Kano State shut down schools due to two different reasons.

Initially, the state government closed four tertiary institutions – RMK College of Advanced and Remedial Studies, School of Environmental Studies, School of Rural Technology and Entrepreneurship Development, and Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta, ABCOAD – due to concerns over insecurity.

More recently, Kano State along with other northern states like Kebbi, Bauchi, and Katsina, have shut down schools for the entire month of Ramadan.

The reason is to allow students and teachers to observe the fasting period.

This decision has been met eith criticism from various groups, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) who argue that it is discriminatory and disrupts the academic calendar.

The Kano State Government thus appears to be unfazed by critics’ comments.

The decision to go ahead and make the pronouncement of the new resumption date is a testament to this, as many have said.
