The Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area in Kogi State, Hon. Amoka Monday, has imposed a curfew across the council.
He cited escalating security concerns and emphasized that the decision aims to prevent potential disruptions to public peace and stability.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the curfew takes immediate effect and follows the recent ban on unauthorized political gatherings and rallies across the state.
In a statement personally signed by him, Hon. Monday confirmed that the directive aligns with orders from the state government.
The Commissioner of Police also endorsed the measure as a necessary step to maintain law and order in the area.
The statement warned that movement and gatherings in restricted areas are now prohibited without clearance from the appropriate authorities.
Anyone found loitering or assembling in designated zones without permission will face arrest and prosecution.
Hon. Monday explained that the curfew is a proactive measure taken in the best interest of public safety.
He assured residents that the authorities are working closely with security agencies to ensure strict enforcement of the order.
“The safety of our people is paramount,” he stated, emphasizing the need to preserve peace in the local government.
He described the curfew as part of a broader strategy by the Kogi State Government to maintain order.
The government also aims to curb the spread of misinformation and ensure that public events comply with the law.
Residents have been urged to fully comply with the directive and cooperate with security personnel enforcing the curfew.
The police command recently advised Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to cancel her homecoming rally due to security concerns.
Despite the warning, she remained resolute in her decision to proceed with the planned visit to Kogi Central.
She attributed any potential violence to certain political figures she believes are working to disrupt her rally.
The curfew announcement follows a directive from the Kogi State Government banning all political rallies and public gatherings.
Officials justified the move by citing credible intelligence reports of possible unrest in the state.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s media team dismissed the directive and confirmed that her Eid celebration plans remain unchanged.
The senator has been at the center of political controversies since her suspension from the Senate.
She continues to engage in public activities despite ongoing tensions with both state and national authorities.
Local officials have urged residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
Security agencies remain on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any escalation of violence.
