A dark cloud has fallen over Kogi State Polytechnic following the sudden death of one of its final-year students, Miss Dorcas Omotosho, who died after an abortion procedure went wrong in Lokoja.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, has sparked outrage and sorrow among residents of the Sarkin Noma community, where the tragic event took place.

According to Guardian, the 26-year-old student visited a private medical facility, Al-Hassan Clinic and Maternity, located in Sarkin Noma, Lokoja Local Government Area, in a desperate attempt to terminate a six-month pregnancy.

Sources confirmed that although the abortion was initially carried out successfully, the medical team failed to control the excessive bleeding that followed. She eventually bled to death inside the clinic.

Eyewitnesses revealed that a police officer invited to the scene documented the aftermath before her body was transferred to the mortuary at the Federal Teaching Hospital(FTH), Lokoja. “The abortion was completed, but the bleeding couldn’t be stopped. Sadly, she didn’t make it,” one source recounted.

The tragic development quickly drew the attention of law enforcement.

The owner of the clinic has since been arrested and is currently in police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Lokoja.

Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the student’s death and whether medical malpractice or negligence played a role.

When contacted, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic said they were unaware of the incident, noting that students are currently on holiday.

The institution’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale, clarified: “The school is not aware because the students are on break at the moment.”

Efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye, proved unsuccessful as his mobile line was not reachable at the time of filing this report.

The community of Lokoja now grapples with the heartbreaking reality of losing a promising young woman whose life was cut short in her final year of studies.

Meanwhile, the police investigation is expected to shed light on accountability and bring justice to the tragic case.
