Kwankwaso accused of plotting APC return to secure Kano governor’s second term
DDM News

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Musa Iliyasu Kwankwaso, has alleged that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is working to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to him, the move is aimed at ensuring a second term for Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Kwankwaso, who leads the Kwankwasiyya movement and was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, is allegedly making strategic moves to rejoin the APC for political advantage.
Speaking to journalists in Kano on Thursday, Iliyasu, a former commissioner and current Director of Finance at Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, claimed that Kwankwaso has been making relentless efforts to win Tinubu’s approval.
“We know about Kwankwaso’s persistent attempts to gain President Tinubu’s attention so that he can return to the APC and secure his governor’s second term,” Iliyasu stated.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that he warned Tinubu against trusting Kwankwaso, pointing to previous instances where the former Kano governor allegedly betrayed political allies.
According to Iliyasu, Kwankwaso has a history of turning against his political partners, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Tinubu should seek Atiku and Jonathan’s opinions on Kwankwaso.
He formed alliances with Atiku on multiple occasions, yet history speaks for itself.
Under Jonathan’s administration, he appeared to support him but later abandoned him in 2015 when he joined the APC merger,” Iliyasu asserted.
He further accused Kwankwaso of frequently changing political parties to serve his ambitions.
Iliyasu recalled how Kwankwaso left the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, only to later defect to the NNPP in 2023.
“Kwankwaso’s move to the NNPP was calculated to weaken Atiku’s support base in Kano.
Even after reducing Atiku’s votes, he still could not remain in the PDP.
He left for the NNPP, effectively turning his back on Tinubu,” Iliyasu alleged.
He also cited a recent court ruling that questioned Kwankwaso’s membership status in the NNPP.
According to him, key political figures who once stood by Kwankwaso, such as Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila and Alhassan Rurum, have already defected from the NNPP.
“Most NNPP lawmakers who won elections under the party’s logo are now leaning toward the APC.
Before long, Kwankwaso will find himself politically stranded,” Iliyasu claimed.
However, the chairman of the NNPP in Kano, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, refuted these claims, insisting that the party’s core members have no intention of defecting to the APC.
“As NNPP stakeholders, leaders, and governors, we remain firmly in our party and continue to perform exceptionally well.
Our governor is among the best in Nigeria.
Why would we abandon the NNPP for the APC?” Dungurawa questioned.
He criticized the APC’s governance style, branding its policies as ineffective and burdensome, particularly in areas such as taxation, subsidy removal, security, and economic management.
“Why would an NNPP member switch to the APC?
For what reason?
To waste time or mislead his people?
The APC has failed in governance.
Even one of their former governors, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, admitted that the party lacks capable leaders who understand governance,” Dungurawa argued.
He also dismissed the idea that Kwankwaso would consider returning to the APC, saying it contradicts the ideals that led to the formation of the NNPP.
“How can anyone expect a seasoned leader like Kwankwaso to return to the APC?
He built the NNPP from scratch.
Without him, the party wouldn’t exist.
Anyone claiming NNPP members are defecting is simply spreading falsehoods,” he declared.
