Lagos State House of Assembly affirms legality of ex-Speaker’s impeachment

Lagos, Nigeria – Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly emphasized on January 30, 2025, that the removal of former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa adhered to constitutional standards.

Furthermore, this assertion followed their recent meeting with the Department of State Services (DSS) at their Shangisha office.

After the meeting, the lawmakers clearly stated that their decision to remove Obasa aligned with the 1999 Constitution.

Furthermore, they emphasized adherence to the Powers and Privileges Act throughout the entire process of decision-making.

They highlighted Sections 92 and 96, which detail the legal procedures for electing and removing a Speaker.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly, acting as an independent government branch, fulfilled its constitutional duty for the benefit of Lagos residents.

Any efforts to dispute this lawful action challenge the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution,” the lawmakers declared.

Additionally, the Assembly expressed appreciation to the DSS for their professionalism during the investigation aimed at clarifying the removal’s circumstances.
