Lagos street sweepers accuse LAWMA of underpayment
DDM News

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has responded to a viral video that sparked public outrage on social media.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports, the video featured a street sweeper claiming that workers were being underpaid and had not received their promised wages.
According to the worker, sweepers had been earning only ₦30,000 per month, which was recently increased to ₦40,000 in February.
The video quickly gained attention, with many Nigerians criticizing the alleged exploitation of street sweepers in Lagos.
LAWMA responds to allegations
In response to the public outcry, LAWMA issued a statement addressing the concerns raised in the video.
The statement was shared by Jibril Gawat, the Special Assistant on Social Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
LAWMA clarified that the street sweeping programme is managed through private contractors, not directly by the agency.
These private companies are responsible for hiring and paying the sweepers under structured contracts.
LAWMA emphasized that the recent wage adjustment aligns with the national minimum wage review.
According to the statement, street sweepers currently earn ₦40,000 per month, while supervisors receive ₦50,000.
Breakdown of the wage structure
LAWMA explained that street sweepers work in four-hour shifts daily.
The agency argued that their wages are proportionate to their work schedule.
It stressed that private contractors are responsible for ensuring timely salary payments to workers.
LAWMA assured the public that any reported discrepancies in payments would be investigated.
The agency also pledged to take necessary action against private firms violating contractual agreements.
LAWMA’s welfare initiatives for sweepers
LAWMA reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and well-being of street sweepers.
It highlighted several initiatives aimed at improving their working conditions and financial stability.
These initiatives include regular health and safety training sessions for all sweepers.
The agency has also reclassified sweeping routes to enhance worker security and efficiency.
LAWMA provides accident and emergency insurance coverage to protect sweepers in case of injuries.
Additionally, it supplies workers with uniforms and essential work tools to maintain professionalism.
The agency stated that these measures are designed to improve the dignity and efficiency of street sweepers.
Ensuring fair treatment and transparency
LAWMA reassured the public of its commitment to fair treatment and transparency.
It stated that any contractor failing to meet payment obligations would be held accountable.
LAWMA urged sweepers to report any salary discrepancies to the appropriate authorities.
The agency emphasized that the success of the street sweeping programme depends on the dedication of its workers.
It reiterated its pledge to improve working conditions and provide financial stability for all sweepers.
LAWMA also called on the public to support its efforts in maintaining a clean Lagos.
The statement concluded by reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights of street sweepers.
