At the Federal University of Agriculture, now known as the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, there is a large-scale protest going on.

According to reports, the protest had been building for months because of the large increase in school tuition at the conclusion of the previous year.

Furthermore, the University Management, led by Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, the Vice Chancellor, had started implementing a biometric exercise that would prevent students who had not paid their school fees from taking the exam.

The VC and his colleagues proceeded from hall to hall as the exams got underway yesterday, kicking out pupils who had defaulted and some who had actually paid but were impacted by the Biometric system’s inaccuracy.

But today, the students took matters into their own hands, attacked the VC, and drove him from the hall while the school security fired firearms and used tear gas, destroying university property in the process.

The students were observed chasing the VC and hurling stones and sticks at his official car while screaming, “No Gree For Anybody,” “We No Go Gree O.”

Due to student occupation of the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, bonfires, and other activities, the University has been closed indefinitely.

Iwe is a professor of food science and technology who has held many positions at the institution, including deputy VC (academics), head of department, and dean of students affairs.
