Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are in advanced talks to purchase Spanish club Malaga, with the aim of expanding their football empire.

FSG held exploratory talks with Malaga in February, and are now preparing a bid to assume control of the 51% stake owned by majority shareholder Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani of Qatar.

The move is part of FSG’s desire to embark on a multi-club project, with Liverpool being the flagship team.

The idea is to create a network of clubs that can share resources, ideas, and players, with the ultimate goal of developing young talent and increasing the value of players.

Malaga, who are currently in Spain’s second tier, have struggled financially in recent years, and are seen as a prime target for FSG’s expansion plans.

However, any takeover will be complicated by the complex ownership situation at Malaga, who have been in administration since 2019.

FSG will also face competition from Paris Saint-Germain, who are reportedly further along in their bid to acquire Malaga.

Do Liverpool Own Any Other Clubs?

FSG currently owns Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox, National Hockey League franchise Pittsburgh Penguins, NASCAR’s RFK Racing, and TGL’s Boston Common Golf.

However, Liverpool is their only football club.

Why Liverpool Would Want a Multi-Club Project

Multi-club ownership provides several benefits, including commercial advantages, brand expansion, and the ability to develop young players.

Clubs under the same ownership can share resources, ideas, and players, with the ultimate goal of developing young talent and increasing the value of players.

The concept of multi-club ownership has been around for decades, but it has gained popularity in recent years.

UEFA relaxed their rules last year to allow clubs under common ownership to compete in the same competition.

Other Premier League clubs, such as Manchester City and Chelsea, have already established multi-club projects, with City’s City Football Group and Chelsea’s BlueCo being two notable examples.

Are Liverpool Allowed to Own Another Club?

Multi-club ownership is legal, and UEFA’s relaxed rules allow clubs under common ownership to compete in the same competition.

However, there are still regulations in place to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure fair competition.

What’s Next for Liverpool’s Malaga Bid?

FSG will continue to evaluate their bid, and will likely face competition from Paris Saint Germaine.

The serial French Ligue 1 champions are also interested in acquiring the club.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG)

The group’s website explains thus:

“At FSG, we view ourselves less as owners and more as stewards of a public trust.

“A Global Sports, Marketing, Media, Entertainment and Real Estate Portfolio
What began as a group of like-minded investors in 2001 with the acquisition of the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park, and 80 percent of the New England Sports Network (NESN), has grown in the span of two decades to include Liverpool Football Club (LFC), the Pittsburgh Penguins, NASCAR’s RFK Racing (RFK), sports marketing and consulting firm Fenway Sports Management (FSM), and real estate division Fenway Sports Group Real Estate (FSGRE) that oversees the assets, acquisitions, and development of FSG’s properties.

“FSG has combined a deep respect for analytics with the intangibles of sports that go beyond the realm of data and science. During FSG’s tenure, the Red Sox have amassed four World Series Championships, one of which ended an 86-year drought. In less than a decade, FSG took Liverpool F.C. to the pinnacle of world football, winning every club trophy available, including the team’s first League title in 30 years, its sixth European Cup, and first ever FIFA Club World Cup.

“What others dismissed as relics of a prior era, FSG made contemporary through the care, art, and investment that transformed two of the worlds most beloved and hallowed sports venues, Fenway Park and Anfield Stadium, into spectacular year-round entertainment destinations that preserve the charm and integrity of the manner in which they were built over a century ago.

“The spirit and intensity of FSG’s global fan base has the power to change the course of any given game and extends well beyond the cities our teams are named after. Like our players, we are similarly inspired by the passion, grit, and constancy of our fans.

“Active Participants in the Community
During FSG’s stewardship, we have transformed a tradition of giving into exemplary models of sports philanthropy, creating two of the most socially conscience clubs in sports.

“More than $100 million in charitable contributions have been made through the Red Sox Foundation to support the New England and Fort Myers communities, and the LFC Foundation has helped more than 83,000 people from the most deprived areas of the United Kingdom, while delivering £25 million in health benefits and putting £8 million directly into the local economy.”
