Amad Dialo was a thorn in Liverpool's flesh

Liverpool missed the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to eighth point after being held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United at Anfield.

The match got off to a lively start, with both teams creating chances.

Manchester United’s Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund both had opportunities to score, but were unable to capitalize.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister also went close, but United goalkeeper Andre Onana was equal to the task.

The visitors took the lead six minutes into the second half through Lisandro Martinez’s powerful effort.

Martinez’s goal was United’s first at Anfield since December 2018.

However, Liverpool equalized shortly after through Gakpo’s superb finish.

Gakpo cut inside, beating United defender Matthijs De Ligt, before producing a clinical finish.

Mohamed Salah then put Liverpool ahead from the penalty spot, scoring his 175th Premier League goal and moving level with Thierry Henry in the all-time list.

Salah’s penalty could not give Liverpool all three points

The penalty was awarded after VAR intervened and judged De Ligt to have handled the ball in the area.

However, Manchester United equalized late on through Diallo’s composed finish.

Substitute Alejandro Garnacho provided the assist, beating his marker before delivering a pinpoint cross that Diallo finished with ease.

Both teams had chances to win it in the end, but ultimately had to settle for a share of the points.

The result sees Liverpool remain six points clear at the top of the table, while Manchester United move up to 13th place.

Despite the draw, Manchester United can take encouragement from their performance, which saw them create several chances and push Liverpool all the way.

The result will be seen as a valuable point for United, who are looking to climb the table after a difficult start to the season.

For Liverpool, the draw will be seen as a missed opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table.

However, they will be encouraged by their performance, which saw them create several chances and dominate possession for large periods of the game.

The Northwest Derby

The Northwest derby between Liverpool and Manchester United is one of the most iconic and intense rivalries in English football.

This matchup is considered a high-profile inter-city rivalry between two of the most successful and beloved clubs in the country.

The rivalry extends beyond the pitch, with historical, economic, and cultural factors contributing to the tension between the two cities.

Liverpool and Manchester have a long-standing competition that dates back to the Industrial Revolution, with both cities vying for dominance in trade, industry, and innovation.

On the pitch, the rivalry is just as fierce, with both teams having a rich history of success.

They have combined for an impressive 39 league titles, 21 FA Cups, and 16 League Cups, among other accolades.

The matchup is often referred to as the “Northwest derby” due to the proximity of the two cities, located just 35 miles apart in the northwest of England.

The rivalry has been fueled by the clubs’ frequent battles for domestic and European supremacy, as well as the cultural and historical differences between the two cities.
