Long-Term Use of Acid Reflux Drugs May Increase Dementia Risk, New Study Finds

Share this:

A widely prescribed class of medications used to treat acid reflux and related digestive conditions may be associated with an increased risk of dementia when taken for extended periods, according to new research.

The findings have drawn attention to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), medications commonly used to reduce stomach acid production and manage conditions such as chronic acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). While these drugs remain effective and generally safe for short-term treatment, researchers say prolonged use may warrant closer monitoring.

Study Examines Long-Term Health Outcomes

The research, published in the medical journal Neurology, analyzed health data from more than 5,700 adults aged 45 and older who showed no signs of dementia at the beginning of the study.

Participants were monitored over several years, with researchers tracking medication use and cognitive health through regular assessments. Approximately one-quarter of the participants had used proton pump inhibitors at some point during the study period.

To better understand potential risks, researchers categorized participants according to how long they had used the medications. These groups included non-users, short-term users, moderate-duration users, and individuals who had taken the drugs for more than four years.

During the follow-up period, hundreds of participants developed dementia. After accounting for factors such as age, sex, race, diabetes, and high blood pressure, researchers found that individuals who had used PPIs for more than four years had a significantly higher likelihood of developing dementia compared with those who had never taken the medications.

Notably, the increased risk was observed only among long-term users. Researchers found no meaningful increase in dementia risk among participants who used the drugs for shorter periods.

Understanding Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. They are commonly prescribed to treat persistent heartburn, stomach ulcers, and GERD, a condition that can lead to serious complications if left untreated.

Because acid reflux affects millions of people worldwide, PPIs have become one of the most frequently prescribed medication classes. Their effectiveness in relieving symptoms has made them a standard treatment option for many patients.

Researchers Urge Caution, Not Panic

Health experts involved in the study emphasized that the findings do not prove that proton pump inhibitors directly cause dementia. Instead, the research identified an association between long-term use and a higher rate of dementia diagnoses.

Scientists say additional studies are needed to determine whether the medications themselves contribute to cognitive decline or whether other underlying health factors among long-term users may explain the increased risk.

The findings add to previous research that has explored possible links between prolonged PPI use and other health concerns, including kidney disease, bone fractures, and cardiovascular complications.

What Patients Should Know

Medical professionals stress that patients should not stop taking prescribed acid reflux medications without consulting a healthcare provider. Abruptly discontinuing treatment can lead to a rebound increase in stomach acid production, potentially worsening symptoms.

For individuals who require long-term acid reflux management, healthcare providers may recommend periodic reviews of treatment plans to determine whether medication remains necessary or whether alternative strategies could be effective.

Lifestyle measures such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding trigger foods, limiting alcohol intake, and making dietary adjustments may also help reduce acid reflux symptoms for some patients.

Ongoing Research Continues

As scientists continue investigating the long-term effects of proton pump inhibitors, experts say the latest findings highlight the importance of balancing the benefits and risks of any medication.

For patients using PPIs over extended periods, regular discussions with healthcare professionals can help ensure treatment remains appropriate while minimizing potential health concerns. Researchers hope future studies will provide clearer answers about the relationship between prolonged acid reflux medication use and cognitive health.
