Victor Akande, a 24-year-old, was presented at the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti on Thursday.
He faces serious charges for allegedly threatening Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese.
This unsettling event reportedly took place on January 15, 2025, at 8:30 p.m. in the Bishop’s Court.
The police charges indicate that Akande not only threatened the bishop but also acted in a way that could disrupt public peace.
In light of these accusations, Akande pleaded not guilty, asserting his innocence throughout the court proceedings.
Inspector Bamikole Olasunkanmi, the police prosecutor, informed the court of his plan to call three witnesses to strengthen the case against Akande.
During the hearing, Akande’s lawyer, Opeyemi Esan, revealed that the bishop had forgiven his client.
Yet, the bishop suggested that Akande should undergo rehabilitation to address behavioral issues.
Esan appealed to the court for bail under lenient conditions, highlighting the need for compassionate treatment in this situation.
In response to the bail request, Magistrate Adefunke Anoma approved bail for Akande, setting it at N10,000.
Furthermore, the court mandated that Akande secure one surety with an equivalent sum.
This surety must also submit an affidavit of means and reside within the court’s jurisdiction to ensure compliance.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for January 28, 2025, providing time for a report on potential settlement or further proceedings.
This case underscores ongoing concerns about public safety and individual behavior within the community.
