Man strangles newborn son to death, blames hardship

Mr Aliyu Yaro, a 19-year-old resident of Adamawa State has been accused of strangling his three-day-old son over alleged economic hardship.

NewsBand gathered that Yaro took the infant from his girlfriend, simply identified as Safiya, killed the child, and buried him in a shallow grave at an uncompleted building.

The sad incident occurred on November 7, 2024, in Kwacham, within the Mubi North local government area of the state.

According to reports, Safiya had been mounting pressure on Yaro to support her and their newborn.

However, following the mounting financial expectations, he allegedly decided to end his child’s life to avoid family obligations.

The mother of the child while recounting her ordeal, said, “It’s true, he has not been providing for me and my baby since I delivered three days before the incident. I’ve complained and threatened to report him to the authorities.

“So he came to my house on the ill-fated night around 8:30; I left him in my room with the baby to buy water at a nearby store. Surprisingly when I returned, he was gone with the baby. I reported the incident to the police, who swiftly got him arrested the following day; unfortunately, he had already killed the baby”.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

He said, “The couple has been taken into custody.”

Speaking further, the police image maker added, “The Adamawa State Police Command has on the 8th of November, 2024 apprehended a 19-year-old Aliyu Yaro for allegedly killing his 3-day-old baby boy.

“The suspect, Aliyu, who hails from Kwacham ward in Mubi North local Government, was accused by Safiya, his girlfriend, of murdering the victim three days after she gave birth to him.

“During interrogations, he confessed to the heinous crime and took the police to the burial site, where the remains were exhumed.

“He narrated that he had impregnated the mother of the deceased, who is now the complainant, and after delivery, she kept calling him to take responsibility for the baby.

“He said that he went to his girlfriend’s house at night, took the infant after sending the mother on an errand, and then buried the child around 9:00 pm in the Girpata area in Mubi”.
