Manchester City thrash West Ham 4-1 at Etihad
Manchester City displayed signs of recovery by thrashing West Ham 4-1 at The Etihad.
This victory marked Pep Guardiola’s side’s first back-to-back wins in three months, signaling an end to their recent crisis.
Although they currently sit sixth in the Premier League, this performance demonstrated that City has finally emerged from their mid-season slump.
Erling Haaland shone brightly in this match, scoring two goals, while Savinho and Phil Foden also contributed to the scoreline.
Despite just three wins in 15 matches across competitions, this victory marked a crucial step toward securing a Champions League spot.
City took an early lead from a fortunate deflection off Savinho’s cross, which went over West Ham’s goalkeeper, Areola.
While City’s early goal provided a foundation for dominance, they struggled to assert control initially.
The uncertainty that plagued their previous performances resurfaced in the first half, with experienced players misplacing passes and losing possession.
A notable moment occurred in the 21st minute when Manuel Akanji hesitated on the ball, allowing Crysencio Summerville to steal it and charge toward goal.
However, the referee’s dubious foul call on Summerville halted West Ham’s momentum.
West Ham had another opportunity in the 34th minute when Savinho under-hit a pass to Kevin De Bruyne.
Summerville capitalized on this mistake but failed to convert, slicing the ball wide under pressure.
This miss proved costly, as City doubled their lead just before halftime.
Haaland assisted Foden, who sent a brilliant cross to Savinho, leading to Haaland’s unmarked header for his 20th goal.
In the 55th minute, Haaland scored his second goal, expertly chipping the ball over Areola from Savinho’s perfect pass.
Just three minutes later, Foden scored after De Bruyne intercepted a poor ball from Kudus, sealing the match for City.
Although Niclas Fullkrug scored for West Ham in the 71st minute, it was ultimately too late to alter the match’s outcome.
Manchester City had already secured a comfortable lead and confidently maintained control throughout the second half.
Meanwhile, Newcastle continued their impressive form with three consecutive Premier League away victories, recently defeating Ipswich and Manchester United.
They now prepare to face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday, looking to maintain their winning momentum.
