NAFDAC Investigates Alleged Use of Polythene in Frying Plantain Chips

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has initiated an investigation into a viral social media post alleging that a woman fried plantain chips using oil adulterated with polythene. NAFDAC’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, stated that the agency is adopting a science-based approach to verify the claim before taking any action. The viral post suggests that a woman melted polythene into oil before grating plantain to make chips. NAFDAC emphasized its commitment to safeguarding public health and urged consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing regulated food products.
The agency highlighted that the post circulated without specifying the geographical location and started circulating before the alleged practice date. NAFDAC assured the public of its proactive measures in health protection and announced plans to conduct necessary laboratory investigations into the claim. It advised consumers to exercise caution and vigilance, purchasing food products only from reputable sources with visible NAFDAC registration numbers on labels. NAFDAC warned against products with suspicious packaging, objectionable smell/color, or unrealistically low prices. The agency pledged a thorough investigation into the disturbing claim and assured action based on scientific findings.
Earlier, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency cautioned consumers about fried plantains, popularly known as “plantain chips,” urging vigilance due to the same viral report of a woman allegedly melting polythene into hot oil for frying plantains to harden the chips. The collaborative efforts between regulatory bodies emphasize the importance of ensuring the safety and quality of food products for consumers across Nigeria.
