The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has endorsed the expulsion of Precious Mbakwe, a 300-level student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), for physically attacking a lecturer, Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports.

Mbakwe, a student of the Department of History and International Studies, was found guilty of assaulting Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies.

The university took disciplinary action after a thorough investigation, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining order and discipline within the institution.

A letter signed by the university registrar, Victor Modebelu, officially informed the student of her expulsion for violating institutional disciplinary regulations.

According to the letter, the student breached Regulation 4 (SDR) of the university’s disciplinary code, which warranted her dismissal.

Eyewitness reports indicated that the altercation began when the student attacked the lecturer for interrupting her TikTok video recording.

Mbakwe allegedly bit the lecturer multiple times and tore his clothes during the heated confrontation in the Faculty of Arts corridor.

Following the attack, the university management promptly launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The severity of the student’s actions prompted the university to impose the ultimate academic sanction—expulsion from the institution.

This disciplinary measure underscores the university’s dedication to ensuring a safe, respectful, and conducive academic environment for both students and staff.

NANS has strongly condemned the student’s actions, emphasizing that violence against lecturers is unacceptable in any educational setting.

The student’s behavior contradicts the principles of academic discipline, respect, and intellectual pursuit that universities strive to uphold.

Acts of violence against lecturers undermine the core values that define a functional and effective academic institution.

A university should be a place for learning, intellectual engagement, and mutual respect between students and academic staff.

Physical confrontations disrupt the educational process and create an atmosphere of fear and hostility on campus.

A student’s conduct reflects not only on the individual but also on the reputation of the entire academic community.

The expulsion of the student serves as a strong warning against indiscipline and misconduct within the university setting.

NANS has urged students nationwide to always uphold decorum and resolve conflicts through appropriate institutional channels.

Educational institutions must uphold high standards of behavior to ensure effective learning and harmonious coexistence.

The university’s decision highlights the importance of holding students accountable for actions that violate institutional rules and ethical standards.

Students are expected to resolve conflicts through established procedures rather than resorting to physical aggression or violent behavior

NANS has reiterated that students must use grievance resolution mechanisms instead of engaging in disruptive conduct.

Respect for lecturers is a fundamental principle that upholds the integrity and structure of academic institutions.

Lecturers play a critical role in shaping students’ intellectual and professional development through mentorship and guidance.

A culture of mutual respect fosters a positive learning environment and encourages constructive academic discourse between students and faculty.

Discipline and adherence to university regulations are essential for maintaining order and promoting academic excellence.

The university’s disciplinary committee acted appropriately by taking decisive action against the student involved in the assault.

Expulsion serves as a deterrent to prevent future occurrences of student misconduct and violence against academic staff.

Students must understand that their actions have consequences, and institutions will enforce disciplinary measures when necessary.

NANS has called on university managements across the country to take strong action against any student engaging in violence.

Maintaining discipline within the university community benefits both students and lecturers by creating a peaceful learning atmosphere.
