NAPTIP apprehends 115 human trafficking suspects in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), on July 30, 2024, arrested suspected human traffickers in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers States.

The NAPTIP Zonal Commander, Mr. Emmanuel disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo on Tuesday.

Emmanuel said: “Between July 2023 and now, we’ve apprehended 115 human traffickers within the zone and rescued about 75 victims.

“Out of the 75 victims rescued, we have empowered 25 of them with skills in tailoring, hairdressing, barbing, and shoemaking.

“Most of the victims rescued are kept in our shelter, and we’ve counseled, empowered, and reunited them with their families”.

Emmanuel noted that during this time, NAPTIP took 15 cases to court, won three, and still has 12 ongoing.

The zonal commander pleaded with judges to focus more on human trafficking cases.

As it will help stop other traffickers from committing the same crime.

He also noted that coastal communities in the area face a serious problem with human trafficking.

“Many victims of human trafficking have been rescued from the coastal areas,” he said.

Plea to the public

“We appeal to members of the public that this fight against human trafficking should not be left in the hands of NAPTIP and the Federal Government alone.

“The agency needs the support and cooperation of all stakeholders so that together we can fight this crime. (SIC)

“We have financial constraints to carry out robust sensitization and campaigns against human trafficking, especially to rural communities, and feeding victims is very expensive now,” he said.

He advised parents and guardians to abstain from allowing relatives to train their children on the pretext of securing a job for them.

He said that in most cases, people use such children or wards for child labor or prostitution.

Mr. Emmmanuel warned traffickers to stop their activities, saying, “We will apply the full weight of the law to anyone found guilty”.

NAN reported that July 30 marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

The theme for this year is “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.”

NAN said that this year’s global campaign urges accelerated action to end child trafficking.

NAN reports that traffickers exploit many children around the world, with girls suffering the most.
