Nasarawa Assembly condemns protest by students of state polytechnic

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has condemned the protest by students of Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, which led to the destruction of properties in the institution.

The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr. Mohammed Adamu-Omadefu, stated this when he visited the school on Friday to assess the extent of damage to the properties.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Thursday, students of the polytechnic protested against alleged closedown of the institution’s registration portal and increase in late registration fee  from N5,000 to N10,000 by the management

The House said that it would conduct an independent investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the protest in the interest of peace and development of the education sector.

He said that the visit followed a directive from the leadership of the House to meet with the school management and student leadership to find out what happened.

“The state assembly condemns in its totality the destruction of property in the institution, whatever is the reason; the students took it too far, we expect them as youths and leaders of tomorrow not to take laws into their hands.

“I am directed by the Chairman, House Committee on Education under the instruction of Mr. Speaker to visit the school, to meet with the Rector and the leader of the students in this regard,” he said

Adamu-Omadefu said that Gov. Abdullahi Sule’s administration is investing heavily in the education sector considering its importance to societal development.

The chairman restated the continued determination of the House to support government efforts toward improving the standard of education in the state.

The Rector of the institution, Dr. Justina Kotso, and President of Nasarawa State Student Association, Alkamis Ladan, also condemned the destruction of school properties, stressing that it was uncalled for. (NAN)
