Nigeria has been plunged into darkness yet again on Thursday following the latest collapse of the country’s national power grid, disrupting bulk power supply around 11:20am.

This national embarrassment marks the third collapse in a week and the 12 in less than a year, raising concerns over the reliability of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and the competence of Power Minister, Mr Adebayo Adelabu.

The incident was confirmed via social media by the Nigeria National Grid, which posted on X through its official account, @NationalGridNg: “BREAKING: Another Grid Setback Experienced.”

A check on the Independent System Operator (ISO), an independent arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), revealed that all power plants connected to the grid were not generating electricity by 12:00pm.

The ISO’s website indicated that the generation plants produced an average of 2,323 megawatts of electricity at 11:00am but showed a reading of 0.00 MW by 12:00 PM.

Meanwhile, at the time of filing this report, TCN had not provided an explanation for the collapse.

While confirming the outage, Jos Disco stated that the power interruption within its franchise area was due to the loss of supply from the national grid.

“The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred this morning at about 11:28 hours of today, Thursday, 7th November 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.”

“We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy.”
