(DDM) — The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 44,000 litres of illegally refined petroleum products and arrested eight suspects in Rivers State as part of ongoing operations to curb oil theft and illegal refining.

The operation, carried out under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, targeted criminal networks engaged in the illicit production and distribution of petroleum products in the Niger Delta region.

According to naval authorities, the seizure followed credible intelligence that led operatives to locations where illegal refining activities were being conducted.

The intercepted products, believed to have been processed in makeshift refineries, were discovered in storage facilities and transport containers ready for distribution.

Officials confirmed that eight individuals were apprehended during the raid and are currently in custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Navy reiterated its commitment to dismantling illegal refining operations, which it described as a major threat to Nigeria’s economy and environmental sustainability.

Security experts note that crude oil theft and illegal refining have long plagued the Niger Delta, leading to significant revenue losses and widespread environmental degradation.

They also highlight the dangers posed by these activities, including oil spills, fires, and health risks to local communities.

The Nigerian Navy emphasized that Operation DELTA SENTINEL remains a critical component of efforts to secure the nation’s oil assets and ensure that resources are properly accounted for.

Authorities added that sustained operations would continue across the region, with increased surveillance and patrols aimed at deterring criminal activities.

Community leaders have been urged to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information that could help identify and dismantle illegal refining camps.

Analysts believe that stronger enforcement, combined with community engagement and economic alternatives for locals, will be key to addressing the root causes of oil theft.
