ABUJA, Nigeria — Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has resigned from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ending weeks of speculation over his future in the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Hanga, who serves as the Senate’s Deputy Minority Whip, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the NDC Chairman in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State. In the letter, the senator explained that his decision was motivated by the need to focus on his personal affairs, which he said had been neglected because of the demands of active political engagement.
While confirming his exit from the NDC, Hanga did not disclose his next political destination, leaving uncertainty over whether he intends to join another political party or remain politically independent for the time being. His silence has fuelled fresh speculation about his future as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
The resignation follows weeks of reports suggesting that the senator had become dissatisfied with developments within the NDC. Political observers linked his decision to alleged concerns that his loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya political movement and its leader, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had not received adequate recognition within the party.
There have also been reports that senior figures in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, separately engaged Hanga in discussions aimed at persuading him to join the APC. However, neither the senator nor the APC has officially confirmed the outcome of those reported meetings.
Hanga recently attracted national attention after meeting with President Bola Tinubu. Following the meeting, he reportedly stated during a radio interview that although he believed President Tinubu was well positioned to secure victory in the next presidential election, he did not expect the President’s political party to win Kano State. The comments generated widespread debate and intensified speculation about his political future.
Political analysts believe Hanga’s resignation could reshape political calculations in Kano State, particularly within Kano Central Senatorial District, where he remains a prominent political figure.
