The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has urged Nigerians to support the police.

He made this call while speaking at the Strategic Security Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Abeokuta, Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports

The theme of the event was “Improving Nigeria’s Internal Security and Economic Prosperity through Inclusive Policing.”

The retreat aimed to develop strategies to strengthen policing and enhance security across Nigeria.

A statement by NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, emphasized Dr. Ogbuku’s commitment to supporting security agencies.

NDDC has consistently collaborated with law enforcement agencies to improve security in the Niger Delta region.

Dr. Ogbuku highlighted the importance of inclusive policing and urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement officers.

He stated that crime prevention requires active participation from both security agencies and the general public.

NDDC’s commitment to security and development

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was established to promote stability, security, and economic development in the Niger Delta.

Since its inception, the commission has launched several initiatives to address security challenges in the region.

NDDC has worked with the Nigeria Police Force to enhance security and combat crime.

The Niger Delta has long struggled with issues like militancy, oil theft, kidnapping, and communal conflicts.

These security challenges have made collaboration between the police, government, and stakeholders necessary.

Dr. Ogbuku reaffirmed NDDC’s dedication to strengthening security through strategic interventions.

He commended the police for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting lives and property.

He also called for periodic mental evaluations for officers to ensure professionalism in law enforcement.

The importance of inclusive policing

Dr. Ogbuku emphasized that policing should not be left solely to law enforcement agencies.

He stated that citizens must work with the police to improve security.

“If the police are reported to be failing, citizens should also contribute to police success,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to report crimes and provide useful information to help officers solve cases.

Inclusive policing fosters trust and cooperation between communities and security agencies.

Building strong partnerships between police and the public leads to better crime prevention.

Dr. Ogbuku highlighted that effective policing requires teamwork between law enforcement officers and civilians.

Addressing unprofessional conduct and mental health concerns

The retreat, organized by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, aimed to assess police challenges and solutions.

One major topic of discussion was unprofessional conduct among officers.

Dr. Ogbuku stressed the need for regular evaluations to identify officers struggling with their duties.

He recommended mental health assessments to ensure officers have emotional stability.

“The Nigeria Police Force should conduct psychological tests to evaluate officers’ mental health,” he said.

This will help ensure emotional intelligence is applied when handling security matters.

Frequent exposure to crime and high-risk situations can impact officers’ psychological well-being.

Mental health support is necessary to improve officer performance and public trust in law enforcement.

NDDC’s support for the Nigeria Police Force

The Niger Delta Development Commission has launched several initiatives to support police operations.

Dr. Ogbuku outlined key interventions aimed at improving policing efficiency.

One major project is the installation of 60kVA solar inverters in police headquarters across the Niger Delta states.

The first installation has been completed at the Imo State Police Headquarters.

Additional installations are underway in other states.

These solar inverters will provide reliable electricity to police facilities.

A steady power supply will support crime monitoring, forensic investigations, and emergency response operations.

NDDC has also provided communication gadgets to the Rivers State Police Command.

The commission has repaired damaged communication masts and armored personnel carriers (APCs) in Rivers and Bayelsa States.

These interventions enhance police mobility and communication efficiency.

Maritime security enhancements

Given the region’s geography, waterway security is a major concern.

Criminal activities like piracy, oil bunkering, and smuggling threaten peace in the Niger Delta.

To combat these issues, NDDC has donated six 250-horsepower Yamaha outboard engines to security agencies.

The commission has also rehabilitated six additional outboard engines for marine patrol operations.

These interventions will strengthen security agencies’ capacity to combat crime on waterways.

Improved maritime security will benefit communities and businesses relying on water transport.

Strengthening NDDC’s partnership with security agencies

NDDC’s efforts highlight the importance of collaboration between government agencies and security forces.

The partnership between NDDC and the Nigeria Police Force has produced significant results.

Dr. Ogbuku reaffirmed NDDC’s commitment to working with law enforcement agencies.

“The donations highlight the partnership between NDDC and the Police Force in the Niger Delta,” he said.

Security is crucial for the development of the region.

By supporting law enforcement, NDDC contributes to a safer and more prosperous Niger Delta.

The need for sustained security reforms

While NDDC’s contributions are commendable, more work is needed to strengthen security.

Issues like poor funding, outdated policing equipment, and delays in justice hinder law enforcement effectiveness.

A comprehensive approach is needed to enhance police operations.

This includes improved training programs and better welfare packages for officers.

Deploying modern crime-fighting technologies is also essential.

Nigeria must adopt global best practices in law enforcement.

Community policing models have proven effective in many countries.

A similar approach in Nigeria would improve public trust and crime prevention.

Conclusion

Dr. Samuel Ogbuku’s call for national support highlights the importance of collective efforts in policing.

NDDC’s initiatives, including infrastructure improvements and maritime security, demonstrate its commitment to enhancing law enforcement.

The Nigeria Police Force plays a vital role in national stability and economic growth.

Continuous investment in security will foster business confidence and attract investment.

A well-equipped and community-oriented police force is essential for Nigeria’s development.

All stakeholders must collaborate to ensure sustainable security reforms.

By working together, Nigeria can build a safer and more prosperous society.
