As part of efforts to avert flood occurrence in the state, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has taken sensitization programme to schools children in Kaduna.

Speaking during the one day sensitization programme for the first batch of students in Kaduna yesterday, NEMA North West Coordinator, Musa Ilallah said the children are most vulnerable group in the society, flood disaster inclusive and hence the need to sensitize them on the Disaster Risk Reduction, DRR.

Ilallah said the essence of the sensitization is to inculcate the culture of DRR in the hearts and minds of the children and offer them basic tips on personal safety within and outside the school.

According to him, “among the numerous objectives of this workshop are to educate school children on disaster risk identification and reduction techniques, prevalent hazards in schools and homes.

“As we are all aware, children are the most vulnerable group in the society and this therefore underscores the need for us to focus our attention on children with a view to develop their capacity so that they can competently mitigate the impact of disasters.

“It is important to once again emphasize that this effort is in conformity to the UN character’s paradigm shift from disaster relief to disaster risk reduction. This we cannot ignore or down play,” Ilallah said.

The North West Zonal Coordinator however urged the students to pass the message on to other school children and members of larger society just as he said the children will henceforth be addressed as Children Against Disaster Advocates, CADA.

School children present at the one day sensitization programme include Government Technical College, Malali, Government Girls Secondary School, Doka, Government Girls Secondary School, Narayi, Dalet Senior Secondary School, Kawo, Kaduna Capital School, Malali, Junior and Secondary School (Boys), Doka among others.
