LAGOS, Nigeria — The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has commended the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) for what it described as the transparent implementation of new capital requirements for insurance companies, saying the process will strengthen confidence and promote long-term growth in the Nigerian insurance industry.

The Association said the implementation approach adopted by the insurance regulator demonstrates its commitment to fairness, stakeholder engagement and regulatory stability. It noted that transparency throughout the process has helped provide clarity for operators while supporting efforts to build a stronger and more resilient insurance sector.

According to the NIA, the revised capital requirements are intended to enhance the financial capacity of insurance companies, improve risk management and ensure that operators remain capable of meeting their obligations to policyholders. The Association added that stronger capitalisation will also improve the industry’s ability to underwrite larger risks and contribute more effectively to national economic development.

The NIA also acknowledged the consultations held by NAICOM with industry stakeholders during the implementation process, describing continuous engagement between regulators and operators as essential to achieving effective regulatory reforms. It expressed optimism that the collaborative approach would facilitate compliance while minimising disruptions within the industry.

Industry experts have argued that stronger capital requirements can improve the overall stability of the insurance market by enhancing companies’ financial resilience and reducing systemic risks. The Association reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with NAICOM and other stakeholders to promote sound corporate governance, professionalism and best practices across the insurance industry. It urged member companies to continue strengthening their operations in line with regulatory expectations and international standards.
