Awka – Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has said that a time of recession called for added patriotism on the part of the leaders and the led, noting that it was a time for utmost commitment to nation-building for the benefit of posterity.

He urged Nigerians, especially those occupying leadership positions to always reflect on the objectives of founding fathers of the country in their decision making, noting that if Nigerians did not change their ways “our children will not forgive us. Let us therefore work together for the progress of the country, otherwise our children will not forgive us. The society we abuse today will take its revenge on our children tomorrow.”

Obi’s independence anniversary message read in part, “As our country marks her 56th anniversary, there is need for all of us to reflect on the state of the nation. While we still contend with political, economic and security challenges, there is hope that if we as a people demonstrate the will, we can overcome our constraints.”

Pointing out that marginalization of some sections would certainly continue to retard the robust growth of the nation, Obi therefore expressed support for restructuring of the nation’s polity in the interest of Justice and equity.

The former Anambra governor also called for a concerted effort to reduce cost of governance as well as diversification of the key economic bases of the nation.

In his message, the deputy national chairman (South East)of the Mega Progressives People’s Party(MPPP), Chief A.K.U. Opia, quoting the late Nigeria’s Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa-‘..the future of this vast country of Nigeria depend in the main on the effort of ourselves to help ourselves’

The erstwhile chairman of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Anambra state, Chief Amechi Obidike called on all Nigerians to embrace peace, commitment to nation building and love for one another.
