(DDM) – Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has once again emphasized that Nigeria’s underdevelopment stems not from a lack of natural or human resources, but from the absence of compassionate and courageous leadership capable of uniting the nation.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Obi made the remarks while addressing a gathering of professionals and civic leaders, stressing that only a leadership anchored on empathy, fairness, and national interest can rescue Nigeria from its present socio-economic decline.
He lamented that the country’s wealth has consistently been mismanaged by leaders who prioritize personal gain over public service, resulting in deepening poverty, insecurity, and infrastructural decay.
“Our problem is not the availability of resources,” Obi stated. “It is the lack of responsible leadership, leadership that feels the pain of the people and acts selflessly for the common good.”
The former Anambra governor urged Nigerians to support leaders who demonstrate both competence and character, noting that development can only thrive when citizens are governed by individuals who put the people first.
DDM reports that Obi, who has consistently positioned himself as an advocate of accountable governance, said national progress demands leaders who are ready to confront corruption, reduce waste, and inspire collective sacrifice.
He argued that courage and compassion must coexist in governance, adding that bold reforms without a human face often inflict more hardship on citizens.
According to him, the true test of leadership is the ability to make decisions that uplift the poor, create opportunities for youth, and foster peace across ethnic and religious divides.
Obi also reiterated his belief that Nigeria’s revival depends on strong institutions and visionary leadership rather than ethnic politics or patronage networks.
He challenged current and aspiring leaders to prioritize transparency, productivity, and investment in education and health as the foundation for rebuilding the nation’s future.
Political observers told DDM that Obi’s latest statement aligns with his long-standing message of value-based governance, fiscal discipline, and people-oriented economic transformation, principles that earned him wide youth support during the 2023 elections.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic hardship, inflation, and insecurity, Obi’s remarks have reignited debate about the moral compass and integrity required to steer the country toward a more equitable and united future.
