Nigeria’s para badminton team has once again demonstrated why it is regarded as one of Africa’s strongest forces in the sport after delivering an outstanding performance at the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship.

Competing against some of the continent’s finest athletes, Team Nigeria returned home with an impressive total of 14 medals comprising nine gold and five silver, a remarkable achievement that further strengthens the country’s reputation as a rising global power in para badminton. The tournament, held in Kampala from July 7 to 12, attracted elite athletes from across Africa seeking valuable international ranking points and qualification opportunities for future world events.

The impressive medal haul was the result of months of intensive preparation, discipline and determination from the Nigerian contingent. Throughout the championship, Nigerian players consistently outperformed many of their rivals, producing commanding displays across several classifications and proving once again that the country’s investment in para sports continues to produce excellent results.

One of the brightest stars of the competition was Paralympic medalist Mariam Eniola Bolaji, who continued her outstanding run of form on the international stage. Widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest para badminton players, Bolaji once again showcased her exceptional quality with composed performances that underlined her status among the world’s elite.

Her latest success adds to an already remarkable career that has seen her become one of Nigeria’s biggest sporting ambassadors. Bolaji has consistently represented the country with distinction at major international competitions, inspiring many young Nigerians living with disabilities to pursue careers in sports. Her achievements have also helped raise the profile of para badminton across the country.

Nigeria’s success in Uganda extended far beyond individual brilliance. The entire team displayed excellent teamwork, tactical discipline and mental resilience throughout the championship. Every athlete contributed to the country’s impressive medal tally, reflecting the depth of talent currently available within Nigeria’s para badminton programme.

Officials praised the athletes for maintaining focus despite the pressure of international competition. Many of the matches were fiercely contested, with players needing to overcome experienced opponents from several African nations before reaching the podium.

The championship also highlighted the steady progress made by Nigeria in developing para sports over the past decade.

While football continues to dominate headlines, para athletes have quietly established Nigeria as one of Africa’s most successful sporting nations. Across para athletics, powerlifting, table tennis and badminton, Nigerian athletes have consistently won medals at continental championships, Commonwealth competitions, Paralympic Games and world tournaments.

The National Sports Commission and the Badminton Federation of Nigeria have increasingly invested in athlete development, coaching programmes and international exposure. Those efforts are beginning to produce consistent results, with Nigerian players regularly competing for honours at major events.

Beyond the medals, the Uganda championship offered athletes valuable international ranking points that could prove important in qualification for future global competitions. Strong performances at tournaments of this level improve players’ rankings and provide experience against quality opposition, both of which are essential for long term development.

Sports analysts believe Nigeria’s latest achievement also reflects the country’s growing strength in identifying and nurturing talented para athletes. Improved grassroots competitions, talent discovery programmes and specialised coaching have expanded opportunities for athletes across different parts of the country.

For many of the players, representing Nigeria remains a source of enormous pride. Their success demonstrates that determination, discipline and proper support can overcome physical challenges and create opportunities to excel on the international stage.

The achievement has been widely celebrated by sports administrators and supporters, who described the medal haul as another important milestone for Nigerian sports. Many believe the team’s performance should encourage greater investment in para sports, particularly in facilities, equipment and youth development programmes.

Such investment could enable Nigeria to produce even more world class athletes capable of competing successfully at the Paralympic Games and World Championships.

Despite this rising standard, Nigeria once again demonstrated its ability to remain among the continent’s leading nations.

As attention gradually shifts to upcoming international competitions, the Nigerian team will be eager to build on the momentum generated in Kampala. Coaches are expected to continue refining the athletes’ technical and tactical abilities while preparing them for even greater challenges on the world stage.

For Mariam Eniola Bolaji and her teammates, the tournament represents more than just another successful outing. It is another chapter in the inspiring story of Nigerian para sport, where athletes continue to break barriers, challenge expectations and bring pride to the nation through exceptional performances.

With nine gold medals, five silver medals and another dominant display against Africa’s best, Team Nigeria has once again confirmed that the country’s future in para badminton is exceptionally bright. If current progress continues, Nigerian athletes are well positioned to achieve even greater success at future continental and global championships.
