Nigerian set to plant 27,000 moringa trees to break Guinness World record
DDM News

A Nigerian environmental enthusiast, Michael Odenigbo, is gearing up to etch his name in the Guinness World Records by planting 27,000 Moringa trees in just 24 hours.
The ambitious initiative is set to take place in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria, on June 5th and 6th, 2025, and aims to surpass the current record held by Canadian environmentalist Antoine Moses, who planted 23,060 trees in a single day.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Odenigbo’s plan is not just to break a world record, but also to launch a powerful environmental movement centered on climate action, sustainability, and economic empowerment through reforestation.
Odenigbo emphasized that the project has a four-pronged objective: climate change mitigation, economic revitalization, environmental enhancement, and academic research development.
He stressed that planting 27,000 Moringa trees will significantly aid in reducing carbon emissions and contribute to Nigeria’s carbon credit standing.
Carbon credit systems allow countries and companies to earn tradable units by implementing environmental protection projects, which can be monetized on global carbon markets.
With climate change becoming an increasing concern for developing nations like Nigeria, the strategic use of Moringa, a tree known for its fast growth and high carbon absorption capacity is considered, a practical solution.
Experts estimate that a mature Moringa tree can absorb up to 80 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually, positioning it as one of the most carbon-efficient trees in the world, second only to bamboo.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the Moringa tree holds vast economic potential.
Often referred to as the “miracle tree,” Moringa is a source of highly nutritious leaves, seeds, and oils that are used in food, cosmetics, and medicine.
The global market for Moringa products was valued at approximately $16.37 billion in recent reports and continues to grow steadily.
According to Odenigbo, local farmers, entrepreneurs, and researchers in Enugu and beyond stand to benefit greatly from the project’s spillover effects.
He noted that the tree-planting exercise will open up new research opportunities for the medical, agricultural, and industrial sectors in Southeast Nigeria.
The large-scale planting project will be supervised by independent observers and documented for Guinness World Records validation.
The event will be open to the public, with several environmentalists, students, and government officials expected to be in attendance.
Organizers are also calling on volunteers and sponsors to support the record-breaking attempt as a way of promoting green growth and environmental consciousness across the country.
This project represents a fusion of personal ambition and public good, underscoring the power of individual action in tackling global challenges.
Michael Odenigbo’s Moringa tree planting effort could serve as a landmark in Nigeria’s environmental journey, creating a ripple effect across communities and future generations.
As the countdown begins, all eyes are now on Enugu State for what could be a historic moment in Nigeria’s contribution to global climate action.
Will you be part of the green revolution?
