Nigerian soldiers clash with “unknown gunmen” in Abia

A fierce gun battle has been reported between personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unidentified gunmen in Mbata, Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, Abia state.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers arrived at Umuchima village around 6 a.m., targeting suspected gunmen reportedly camped near a river that marks the boundary between Abia and the Mbaise axis of Imo State.

Soldiers have reportedly taken control of key junctions leading in and out of the village, while others engage the gunmen in nearby bushes. Gunfire has persisted as of the time of reporting.

Diaspora Digital Media understands that no official statements have been issued by the Nigerian Army or the Abia State government.

This followed Governor Alex Otti’s recent pledge to enhance security following a meeting with top security officials.

The unknown gunmen menace

The unknown gunmen menace in the southeast, particularly in Abia, has been a pressing concern.

Reports indicate that these unknown gunmen have been engaging in fierce gun battles with the Nigerian Army in areas like Mbata, Umuchima Village, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.

The situation has been escalating, with the Nigerian Army deploying over 15 Hillux and armored vehicles to engage the unknown gunmen.

The army has also taken over junctions leading to and from the village, while others are facing off against the unknown gunmen in the bush.

The root cause is linked to the IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) movement, which has been seeking independence for the Igbo people.

The situation remains volatile, with many residents living in fear of the unknown gunmen and the military’s response.
