(DDM) — Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the worsening insecurity in Sokoto State, describing the situation as unacceptable and a clear failure of governance.

Obi stated that no citizen should be forced to live in fear within their own country, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of any government.

Reacting to recent reports of attacks and rising violence in the state, he warned that the continued deterioration of security conditions poses a serious threat to national stability and development.

He described the situation as a national emergency, calling on authorities at all levels to take urgent and decisive action to restore peace and protect vulnerable communities.

According to Obi, the persistence of insecurity across parts of Nigeria reflects deeper structural challenges, including weak security coordination, inadequate intelligence gathering, and poor response mechanisms.

He urged the Federal Government of Nigeria and security agencies to adopt more proactive strategies, including strengthening local intelligence networks and improving collaboration with communities.

Obi also emphasized the need for increased investment in security infrastructure and personnel, noting that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without addressing underlying socio-economic issues.

He further called for accountability, insisting that leaders must be held responsible for lapses that allow insecurity to thrive.

Residents of Sokoto and surrounding areas have continued to express concern over frequent attacks, kidnappings, and displacement, with many communities living under constant threat.

Security analysts warn that the situation in Sokoto mirrors broader challenges across northern Nigeria, where armed groups have exploited gaps in security architecture to expand their operations.

Obi’s remarks have added to growing public discourse on the need for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security framework.

Political observers say his statement reflects increasing pressure on the government to deliver tangible results in addressing insecurity nationwide.

As the situation evolves, stakeholders continue to call for coordinated efforts to ensure that citizens can live without fear and carry out their daily activities in safety.
