Nigerians Spend $1.44bn on Foreign Education in Six Months

Nigerians spent $1.44 billion on education-related expenses abroad in the first half of 2026, according to figures attributed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), highlighting the significant demand for foreign education and its implications for the country’s foreign exchange market.

The spending reflects the financial commitment of Nigerian families to international education, including tuition payments and other expenses associated with studying overseas.

Foreign education remains attractive to many Nigerians seeking specialised courses, international qualifications and access to career opportunities. However, the cost places considerable pressure on households that must obtain foreign currency to meet tuition and living expenses.

The expenditure also represents an outflow of foreign exchange at a time when Nigeria continues to focus on strengthening currency stability and managing demand for dollars.

Education-related payments are part of Nigeria’s broader spending on international services, alongside medical treatment, travel and other transactions requiring foreign currency.

The figures also highlight the economic importance of improving the quality of domestic education. Stronger universities, better-equipped institutions and expanded access to specialised programmes could help retain more students within the country.

While studying abroad can provide valuable skills and international exposure, improving local educational opportunities could reduce the financial burden on families and support the development of Nigeria’s human capital.
